It’s a big question for intermediate producers trying to get the best possible performance out of their setups. Is hardware worth the investment?

It's the age old question that has had producers and engineers debating for decades. What is the real difference between analog gear and digital plugins? If you’re working with a console that’s not equipped with automation (or more likely, the automation is hopelessly broken—flying faders are one of the first elements to fail on many classic boards) you’ll have to capture the automation performance correctly too.

2. Recall is a nightmare

Anyone who has ever had to recall an analog mix for a client knows what I’m talking about.

Behind every beautifully organized rack of studio hardware is a tangled mess of cable.

4. Your outboard is only as good as your D/A

Printing hardware processing on the way in is risky business.

Unless you have a lot of experience and you’re extremely confident with your gear, going a few dB too far with compression or EQ can turn your mix process into a nightmare.

That means most outboard gear workflows include an extra round trip of AD/DA conversion to interface with hardware.

But lesser quality interfaces can introduce coloration that results in reduced dynamics and frequency response at each stage of conversion.

In many cases, a good quality plugin can sound better than mid-level hardware after additional stages of low quality conversion. You might be surprised!

Digital processing got a bad reputation in the early DAW era for a reason.

The first few generations of plugins suffered from the same issues that plagued the earliest digital recordings.

Those sounds and records haven’t aged well. But plugins have come an extremely long way.

Plugins are now an incredibly important part of the gear marketplace. Plugin manufacturers have been throwing huge budgets and talented engineers at the problems of creating great-sounding digital audio tools for decades now.

Of course, not all plugins are created equal. But pro-quality plugins from top manufacturers are more than a match for analog.

Today’s hardware modelling technology is incredibly sophisticated. Plugin designers take enormous pains to reproduce the desirable non-linearities of analog circuits.

On the other hand, hardware gear manufacturing has gotten more refined as well.

Modern component tolerances and QA procedures ensure that hardware manufacturing is more consistent than ever.

This makes it much more likely that an emulation behaves almost exactly like any given unit you could buy off the shelf.

For a modern piece of gear that’s never been out of production, thorough modelling is effective enough that the difference between the hardware and a high-end emulation isn’t going to make or break your mix. But that doesn’t stop designers from trying to get closer and closer to the real thing!

6. Convenience isn’t just about making things easier

Back to my fabled first console tracking session.

For whatever reason, the studio’s headphone monitoring wasn’t properly configured and the only way to get headphone mixes was by fumbling around with scratchy pre-fader auxes on the console.

Not only was it a far cry from a “proper” headphone signal, it was coloured enough to be potentially misleading.

My point is that “convenience” doesn’t always mean “ease of use”—it can sometimes mean just having basic necessities like headphones and cue mixes available and easy to access.

The plugins vs. hardware debate will probably rage on for the foreseeable future.

There’s so many opinions flying around on either side that it seems unlikely that it’ll ever be fully resolved.

Each side has its merits and valid arguments. Your decision whether to use one or the other rests more on personal preference than any objective benefits.

But before you write your plugins off as cheap digital toys that will never produce a decent sounding record, take a hard look at the problems of analog—the grass isn’t always greener on the other side!

Over the years, I’ve had a lot of experiencerecording with both real guitar ampsand amp plug-ins. In this column, I’d like toshare some of the pros and cons of each asthey relate to real-world studio production.

When I first started playing, I was luckyenough to plug into some nice tube amps,so I grew up with the sound of glowingfilaments and that particular give-and-takethat only a good, nuts-and-bolts amp candeliver. Since then, I’ve amassed a small butvery useful amp collection that actually hasa lot to do with plug-ins.

Here’s what I mean: I’ve found thatplug-ins do a good job of emulatingFenders, Marshalls, and some heavier-gainamps by Soldano and Mesa/Boogie—and,yes, I do have a real Mk IV Boogie head forcomparison. But the software makers don’tseem to offer classic amps from Gibson andMagnatone—both of which I use quitea bit in my TV work, which is heavy onblues and country. So that’s where I focuson the real thing. What these Gibson andMagnatone amps offer is amazing reverb,vibrato, and tremolo, as well as a spongysaturation that’s unmistakable and otherwisehard to come by.

I drive all my amps with a CreationAudio Labs pedal called the Holy Fire.Offering up to 12 dB of clean boost, thispedal allows me to hit the input hard andbring out the true character of tubes. I canalso edge down some of the treble with thepedal’s filter knob. The feel I get from theseamps—being able to increase the crunch asI hit the strings harder—helps me play betterand lay down more dynamic parts. Butthis comes at a cost: To get a kick-ass soundfrom these amps, I need to play them fairlyloud, and that has its own set of issues.Also, the amps need to be captured properly—which is an art form in itself.

I get the best results using a combinationof mics. I like to pair dynamic andribbon mics—either a Sennheiser MD 421or a Shure SM57 dynamic, along with aBeyer M 160 or a Royer R-121 ribbon mic.They go through good cabling into high-qualitypreamps—usually something fromUniversal Audio, Focusrite, or Grace Audio.But that’s just what works for my ears—aslong as the amps are properly represented,other combinations can work well, too.

Sometimes, I’ll crank up a room micwith a Universal Audio 1176-type limiter/compressor to get a huge sound. Again,what this affords is a quirky sonic signaturethat plug-ins usually cannot achieve unlessyou re-amp their output to a room. What’simportant here is preserving the inspirationthat small, unique amps like my Gibsonsand Magnatones deliver as you play—and,of course, their unique tone. However, old,off-the-beaten-path amps like these haveto be properly maintained, which adds totheir cost. It’s like owning an old classic car:Things happen, so be prepared.

Amp plug-ins, on the other hand,don’t have to be maintained (though thecomputers they reside on do). And, ofcourse, it goes without saying that thebiggest boon they offer is the wide varietyof amps, virtual cabinet combinations,emulated pedals, and effects they put atyour fingertips. I’ve been using amp pluginssince they first came on the market, soI can attest that some of them are quitegood now. And, yes, some of them candeliver both convincing tones and a lotof the spongy give-and-take we guitaristslove in real tube amps.

Using headphones, you can track withplug-ins at any time of the day or night,and there is no real setup. Just plug inyour guitar, dial up an amp, and get towork—there’s no creative time wasted onfiddling with stands, cables, and mics. Inaddition, when it comes time to mix thetracks, you can easily alter the sound. Youcan decrease signal saturation, change theEQ, insert a few pedals, or turn up thereverb—things that are not so easy to doon tracks cut with real amps.

One trick I’ve found with amp pluginsis to not use their built-in reverb.Instead, I’ll use something like Audio Ease’sAltiverb, which models real springs, rooms,and studios. I’ll often send my amp plug-ininto Altiverb’s Fender Super Reverb or animpulse response I made from my GibsonFalcon. These tasty reverbs help sell thesizzle of the plug-in and generally make fora better-sounding production.

Another important aspect of guitar pluginsis working with your computer’s latency—the signal delay that happens betweenthe time you play your guitar and when youactually hearing it through the computer.I’ve been running Pro Tools TDM for manyyears, and I’ve used Line 6’s Amp Farm 3with great success. The low latency of aTDM system and TDM plug-ins makesit possible to feel your guitar response in amanner that feels natural—like you’re playingthrough a real amp. However, I’m aboutto move up to Pro Tools HDX and, forsome reason, Line 6 is not updating AmpFarm for this new platform. I’ve talked toother professionals who use HDX and arein the same boat, so I’ll be trying to figurethat problem out shortly. I’ll have to starttracking through RTAS plug-ins, so staytuned for that info.

The point is, it’s important to considerlatency when working with a guitar plugin.You have to make sure its response timeallows you to properly perform your partwithout the delay lag throwing you off.Real amps don’t mess with the immediacyof fingers touching strings—what you playand hear is what you get.
