Fl 8 and up the direct wave sampler has a decent violin patch available for free DL.
Oh god this is awful! I checked this out the other day and man I hate all the directwave sample packs I downloaded. Squidfont is a better choice.
DSK Strings violins is nice also. (Costs)
I'd recommend Edirol before this. I've used both, and I was not impressed with DSK Strings for the most part. It just didn't....fit....with my music. Other people love it though so definitely worth a look.
I would also like to recommend Papelmedia stuff. It sounds fairly decent, and I think its free as well.

Also I like florestan woodwinds. Solid soundfont you can find free online. I used that pack a ton before getting EastWest gear. Definitely can hold its own in terms of freeware quality.
